Game History
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game was directed by Kazuaki Morita and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, following the success of the original The Legend of Zelda released in 1986.
The game launched in Japan on January 14, 1987, and arrived in North America on December 1, 1988. It was later released in Europe in 1990. Zelda II marked a significant departure from its predecessor by introducing a side-scrolling perspective rather than the top-down view players had come to expect, alongside new gameplay mechanics including a magic system and experience points.
At launch, Zelda II received mixed reviews from critics and experienced respectable but lower commercial success compared to the original game. Many players were surprised and sometimes disappointed by its dramatic shift in gameplay style and perspective. The game's difficulty and reliance on grinding experience points also contributed to its somewhat lukewarm initial reception compared to contemporary expectations.
Despite its mixed launch reception, Zelda II has become historically significant to collectors and gaming historians today. It is now recognized as an ambitious and influential title that experimented with genre conventions. The game demonstrated Nintendo's willingness to innovate rather than simply repeat the formula of the original, and it has gained appreciation over time for its unique place in the series' evolution. Its cartridge is a valuable item in retro game collections, particularly early first-print versions.
An interesting development note is that the game was originally planned to be released much earlier in Japan. Additionally, Zelda II was notably one of the final major first-party NES releases in North America, arriving during the console's later commercial years. The game also introduced several elements to the series that would occasionally reappear in later Zelda titles, including certain magic spells and the experience-based progression system.
