Game History
Yoshi's Story was developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 console. The game was directed by Takashi Tezuka and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, continuing the legacy of the Yoshi character introduced in Super Mario Bros. 2.
The game was released in Japan on December 21, 1997, followed by a North American release on March 1998 and a European release later that year. It arrived during a period when the N64 was establishing its library of first-party titles.
Yoshi's Story received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its colorful presentation, charming art style, and accessible gameplay. However, some criticized it for being shorter and less complex than other Nintendo 64 platformers like Super Mario 64. It achieved moderate commercial success but was not considered a blockbuster title compared to the N64's other flagship releases.
The game is historically significant to collectors today primarily due to its scarcity and rising value. Yoshi's Story had a relatively limited print run, and complete copies with original boxes and manuals command higher prices on the secondhand market. The cartridge is among the more expensive N64 games sought by collectors, particularly in excellent condition.
One interesting aspect of Yoshi's Story's development was its visual approach. The game adopted a storybook aesthetic with hand-drawn backgrounds, making it visually distinctive compared to other 3D platformers of the era. This art direction was influenced by the desire to create a unique experience rather than simply recreating the Super Mario 64 formula.
The game also featured a novel structure where players could choose different paths through stages, encouraging multiple playthroughs to experience all content. Additionally, Yoshi's Story introduced various transformations and power-ups that allowed Yoshi to gain temporary abilities, adding variety to the platforming gameplay despite the game's relatively brief campaign length.
