Game History
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together was developed by Quest Corporation and published by Yasuda システムズ in Japan, with later localization handled by Working Designs for North America. The game was directed by Yoichi Miyaji and represented one of the earliest tactical RPGs to reach a mainstream audience on home consoles.
The game was originally released in Japan on November 1, 1995, for the Super Famicom. Working Designs released the English localization in North America on October 29, 1996, for the SNES, making it one of the final notable RPG releases for the console in that region.
Upon release in Japan, Tactics Ogre received strong critical acclaim for its deep strategic gameplay, branching narrative structure, and impressive technical presentation. The North American localization was also well-received, praised for its quality translation and the richness of its story. However, the game's release near the end of the SNES's commercial lifecycle limited its initial sales figures compared to other major RPG releases of that generation.
Today, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together holds significant importance among retro game collectors. Its scarcity in the North American market—driven by the late release window and limited print run—has made complete copies with original boxes and manuals increasingly valuable. The SNES version has become one of the more expensive cartridge-based RPGs to acquire in the collector's market.
The game is historically significant as a pioneering tactical RPG that influenced the genre's development on consoles. Its multiple branching paths and alignment system offered replay value unusual for its era. Working Designs' localization is particularly remembered for its detailed efforts to preserve the game's narrative depth and character development during translation.
The success of Tactics Ogre on SNES led to multiple sequels and spin-offs, including Tactics Ogre II on Super Famicom. The original game received a remake titled Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for PlayStation Portable in 2011, introducing the title to a new generation of players.
