Game History
Suikoden was developed and published by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo (Konami KCET) for the PlayStation console. The game was directed by Yoshitaka Murayama and produced by Kazushige Nojima, with a development team that drew inspiration from classic tactical RPGs and Chinese literature, particularly the novel "The Water Margin."
Suikoden was first released in Japan on December 17, 1995. It later launched in North America on September 1, 1997, and in Europe in 1998, making it one of the earlier major RPG titles available on the PlayStation platform in the West.
The game received generally positive critical reception, with reviewers praising its deep narrative, expansive cast of 108 recruitable characters, strategic turn-based combat system, and impressive production values for its time. However, its commercial performance was initially modest in most regions, though it found a dedicated fanbase that would grow over time. The game's sales were solid but not blockbuster-level compared to contemporary titles like Final Fantasy VII.
Suikoden has become historically significant in the collector's market, particularly the North American version, which is now considered valuable due to its relatively limited initial print run and the game's cult classic status. Original copies in good condition can command significantly higher prices than many PS1 titles, making it one of the more sought-after games from that generation.
An interesting aspect of the game's development was its ambitious scope: the 108-character recruitment system was designed to encourage multiple playthroughs to experience different storylines and outcomes. This design philosophy, inspired by "The Water Margin," became a defining feature of the series. The game was also notable for being one of the first major console RPGs to feature branching narrative paths based on player choices and recruitment decisions, which influenced future RPG design.
The success of the original Suikoden led to multiple sequels and spin-offs, establishing a long-running franchise that remains influential in tactical RPG circles today.
