Game History

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was developed by Capcom and released for the PlayStation 1 on September 22, 1999 in Japan, followed by a North American release on November 11, 1999, and European release in 2000. The game was directed by Kazuhaki Kobayashi and built on the RE Engine that powered Resident Evil 2.

The game introduced the Nemesis creature, a relentless pursuing enemy that hunts the player throughout the campaign, significantly increasing tension compared to previous entries. Players control Jill Valentine as she attempts to escape Raccoon City before its destruction. The gameplay maintained the survival horror formula while introducing more action-oriented elements, including an expanded arsenal and quicktime events that were relatively novel for the genre at the time.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis received generally positive reviews upon launch, with critics praising its atmosphere, the Nemesis AI system, and improved graphics over RE2. The game sold strongly, contributing to PlayStation's dominance in the survival horror market during the late 1990s. It became one of the best-selling entries in the franchise and helped establish RE3 as a fan favorite within the series.

Today, the original PS1 release holds significant value among collectors, particularly complete copies with original cases and manuals. The game remains historically important for its influence on survival horror design and for popularizing the concept of a persistent, intelligent pursuer enemy—a mechanic that influenced countless games afterward.

An interesting development note is that Resident Evil 3 was originally conceived as an interquel, taking place between RE2 and RE: Code Veronica. The game also featured multiple endings based on player decisions, a feature uncommon in survival horror at the time. The Nemesis design itself became iconic, spawning merchandise and appearances in subsequent RE media. In 2020, Capcom released a full remake of RE3 for modern platforms, introducing the game to new audiences and reflecting its enduring legacy within the franchise.
