Game History

Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition was developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy handheld console. It was created as a companion title to the original Pokémon Red and Blue versions, designed to capitalize on the franchise's explosive popularity while offering a different experience centered on the iconic mascot Pikachu.

Pokémon Yellow was first released in Japan on September 12, 1998, approximately one year after Red and Blue. It launched in North America on October 19, 1999, and in Europe on October 4, 2000. The staggered international release reflected Nintendo's careful management of the Pokémon phenomenon across different markets.

The game was exceptionally well-received by critics and consumers alike. It sold over 14 million copies worldwide during its commercial lifetime, cementing its status as one of the best-selling Game Boy titles ever. Players appreciated the game's tie-in with the popular anime television series, which had debuted around the same time as the original games, as it allowed them to experience a story more closely aligned with the show's protagonist Ash Ketchum.

Pokémon Yellow holds significant value among collectors today, particularly original cartridges in good condition. The game's cultural importance as a bridge between the video game and anime properties has elevated its collectibility. Sealed copies command premium prices on the secondary market, especially Japanese versions and those from the earlier North American print run.

An interesting aspect of Pokémon Yellow's development was how it incorporated elements from the anime that weren't present in Red and Blue, including the ability to travel with Pikachu as the player's primary companion, similar to Ash's journey in the show. The game also featured rival Brock and Misty as gym leaders, further cementing the anime connection. Additionally, players could obtain all three original starter Pokémon (Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle) through NPC gifts rather than choosing only one, making the game mechanically distinct from its predecessors and appealing to fans who wanted a more complete Pokédex experience.
