Game History
Pokémon FireRed was developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance handheld console. It was directed by Atsushi Nishida and produced by Ken Sugimori, the legendary character designer behind the Pokémon franchise.
FireRed was released in Japan on January 29, 2004, followed by a North American release on March 22, 2004, and a European release on May 2004. It served as a remake of the original Pokémon Red Version released in 1996 for Game Boy, modernizing the classic with updated graphics, mechanics, and quality-of-life improvements for the GBA hardware.
The game was met with critical acclaim upon launch, with reviewers praising its faithfulness to the original while celebrating the visual enhancements and gameplay refinements. It was also a significant commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling Game Boy Advance titles and helping sustain the Pokémon franchise's momentum during that console generation.
Today, FireRed holds considerable significance among collectors for several reasons. As a remake of the iconic original Pokémon Red, it bridges nostalgic players to their childhood while introducing the Kanto region to new audiences on advanced hardware. Complete in-box copies, particularly first-print Japanese versions, command premium prices in the collector's market due to potential cartridge authenticity issues and production rarity. The game's popularity has unfortunately made it a target for counterfeiting, making authentic copies increasingly valuable.
An interesting aspect of FireRed's development was its use of enhanced Pokémon sprites and animations compared to the original, taking advantage of the GBA's superior processing power. The remake also introduced the physical/special split for certain moves and expanded the Pokédex by including Pokémon from later generations, making it mechanically distinct from its source material despite maintaining the original's structure and story.
FireRed remains one of the most beloved entries in the Pokémon franchise and is frequently cited as one of the best Game Boy Advance games ever made.
