Game History
Persona 2: Innocent Sin was developed by Atlus and published by Atlus in Japan and by Kadokawa Shoten in North America. The game was directed by Kazuki Hirano and produced by Atlus's internal team, building on the foundation of the original Persona game released in 1996.
The game was first released in Japan on December 17, 1999, for the PlayStation 1. It arrived in North America on September 5, 2000, making it one of the few entries in the Persona series to receive an official English localization during the PS1 era. The game was never released in Europe during its original lifespan.
Innocent Sin received generally positive reviews from gaming media upon its North American release, with critics praising its narrative depth, character development, and social link system—mechanics that would become central to later Persona games. However, commercial performance was modest in the West, as JRPGs faced a challenging market during that period. The game found a stronger audience in Japan, where the Persona franchise already had more established recognition.
Today, Persona 2: Innocent Sin is historically significant to collectors for several reasons. It represents a crucial evolutionary step in the Persona franchise, introducing narrative and gameplay elements that would define the series' future success. The original PS1 copy, particularly the North American version, commands high prices on the secondary market due to its limited original print run and relative rarity. It is often considered one of the most valuable PS1 JRPGs among collectors.
An interesting development note is that the game was originally intended to conclude the Persona 2 storyline, but due to the game's length and complexity, a sequel titled Persona 2: Eternal Punishment was released in 2000 in Japan to complete the narrative. This split led to confusion in the West, where only Innocent Sin was initially available.
The game was later ported to the PSP in 2011 in Japan and 2012 in North America, introducing the title to new audiences and making the game more accessible than the increasingly expensive original PS1 copies.
