Game History
Parasite Eve II was developed by Square (now Square Enix) and published by BMG Interactive in North America and Square in Japan. The game was directed by Yoichi Miyaji and served as the sequel to the original Parasite Eve, which itself was an unusual spin-off based on the horror film of the same name. The development team expanded on the original's action-RPG formula while incorporating stronger survival horror elements.
The game was released in Japan on December 29, 1999, for the PlayStation console. North American and European releases followed in 2000, making it available to Western audiences during the peak of the PS1's lifecycle. The staggered international release was typical for Square titles of that era.
Parasite Eve II received generally positive reviews from critics upon launch, who praised its hybrid gameplay combining real-time combat with RPG mechanics and inventory management. The atmospheric presentation and narrative drew particular acclaim. However, commercial performance was moderate, as the survival horror genre faced increasing competition and the game's unique blend of systems didn't achieve mainstream popularity despite critical respect. It sold respectably but never reached bestseller status.
Today, Parasite Eve II holds significant value among collectors for several reasons. The original Parasite Eve series never received widespread recognition compared to Resident Evil or Final Fantasy, making both games increasingly rare and sought-after. Complete copies with original cases and manuals command premium prices on the collector's market. The game's experimental design—balancing action, horror, and RPG elements—has gained retrospective appreciation as an example of Square's willingness to experiment during the PS1 era.
An interesting development note is that the game was built on modified technology from Final Fantasy VII, reflecting Square's efficiency in resource allocation across their PS1 portfolio. The game also featured one of the PS1's most technically ambitious character models for its protagonist Aya Brea, pushing the console's capabilities at the time. Additionally, Parasite Eve II never received a re-release on modern platforms, contributing to its collector appeal as an exclusive PS1 title.
