Game History
Metroid Fusion was developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance. The game was directed by Yoshio Sakamaki, who had previously worked on the original Metroid series. Development began in the late 1990s as part of Nintendo's effort to bring the beloved Metroid franchise to their new handheld console.
Metroid Fusion was released in Japan on November 18, 2002, followed by a North American release on February 24, 2003, and a European release later that year. The game served as a direct sequel to Super Metroid, continuing Samus Aran's story with a science fiction narrative set aboard a space station infested with parasitic X-creatures.
The game received critical acclaim upon launch, with reviewers praising its tight controls, atmospheric design, and engaging gameplay that successfully adapted the Metroid formula to a handheld system. It sold approximately 2.8 million copies worldwide during its initial commercial run, making it one of the most successful Game Boy Advance titles. The game was frequently bundled with the system in various regions, which contributed to its strong sales performance.
Metroid Fusion holds significant value among collectors today for several reasons. It was one of the last major first-party Game Boy Advance releases and has become increasingly sought-after as GBA cartridges have appreciated in value. Loose cartridges command respectable prices on the secondary market, while complete copies in original packaging with box and manual are substantially more valuable, sometimes reaching several hundred dollars.
An interesting aspect of the game's development was the involvement of the Metroid Prime development team at Retro Studios, whose concurrent work on the GameCube's Metroid Prime influenced some design decisions. Additionally, Metroid Fusion remained exclusive to the Game Boy Advance until being ported to the Nintendo Switch Online service in 2023, making it unavailable through traditional means for nearly two decades. This long exclusivity period significantly contributed to its collector value and cultural significance within the gaming community.
