Game History

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete was developed by Game Arts and published by Working Designs for the PlayStation. It was a remake of the 1992 Sega CD game Lunar: The Silver Star, featuring enhanced graphics, expanded content, and a completely new English localization.

The game was released in Japan on August 3, 1996, and in North America on October 31, 1997. A European release followed in 1998. The PlayStation version represented a significant technological upgrade over the original Sega CD release, with improved sprite work, additional story content, and enhanced audio.

Critical reception was generally positive upon launch. Reviewers praised the game's charming story, character development, and classic JRPG gameplay, though some noted its turn-based combat felt dated even at the time. The localization by Working Designs became particularly renowned for its quality and personality, setting a standard for the company's future work. The game found a dedicated audience within the JRPG community, though it remained niche compared to Final Fantasy VII and other major PlayStation RPGs.

Today, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is historically significant to collectors for several reasons. The game became increasingly difficult to find as the PlayStation era ended, and original copies command premium prices on the secondary market. Working Designs' closure in 2005 further elevated the value of their localizations. The game is recognized as part of a wave of quality translated JRPGs that helped establish PlayStation as an RPG destination in North America.

An interesting aspect of its legacy is that the localization introduced many Western players to the Lunar franchise, which had been relatively obscure outside Japan. Working Designs' colorful packaging, including collectible items like cloth maps and instruction manuals, made physical copies particularly desirable for collectors seeking complete sets.

The game received a spiritual successor with Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete in 1999, also localized by Working Designs. Both titles now occupy important positions in PlayStation RPG history, representing the era before widespread digital distribution made retro games more accessible.
