Game History
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy handheld console. The game was directed by Takashi Tezuka and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, with Kazuhito Kadoi serving as the lead programmer. Development began in 1991 and took approximately two years to complete.
Link's Awakening was first released in Japan on August 6, 1993, followed by a North American release in September 1993 and a European release in 1994. The game was notable for being the first Legend of Zelda title developed for a handheld system and the first major Zelda game not set in Hyrule, instead taking place on the mysterious Koholint Island.
The game received critical acclaim upon launch, with reviewers praising its gameplay depth, creative dungeons, and impressive technical achievement for the Game Boy hardware. It performed well commercially, becoming one of the best-selling Game Boy titles and helping drive sales of the handheld console. An enhanced version, Link's Awakening DX, was released in 1998 with added color support and an additional dungeon.
Link's Awakening is historically significant to collectors today for several reasons. It represents a landmark moment when Nintendo successfully brought the Zelda experience to portable gaming, establishing the template for future handheld Zelda titles. The game achieved impressive visual and gameplay sophistication within severe hardware limitations. Its unique standalone story, quirky characters, and charming art style gave it a distinctive identity within the franchise.
An interesting development note is that the game's setting and some character designs were partially inspired by the film Gremlins, with developer decisions to create something that felt distinct from the traditional Hyrule setting. The game also featured numerous cameos and references to other Nintendo franchises, which was unusual for the series at the time. In 2019, Nintendo released a full remake for the Nintendo Switch, introducing the game to a new generation and cementing its status as a beloved classic.
