Game History

Final Fantasy VI Advance was developed by Square (before its merger with Enix) and released for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance handheld console. The game was a port of the 1994 Super Famicom/SNES classic Final Fantasy III (as it was known in the West at the time), one of the most acclaimed entries in the Final Fantasy franchise.

The game launched in Japan on November 30, 2006, followed by a North American release on February 5, 2007. It later arrived in Europe and other regions. The port was developed to introduce the game to a new audience on a portable platform, taking advantage of the GBA's technical capabilities while maintaining the essence of the original.

Final Fantasy VI Advance received generally positive reviews from critics who praised its faithful adaptation of the beloved classic. However, commercial performance was mixed, arriving late in the Game Boy Advance's lifecycle as the Nintendo DS was already establishing dominance in the handheld market. This timing limited its sales potential compared to the original SNES release.

Today, Final Fantasy VI Advance holds significance among collectors as a later-generation GBA release that maintained quality during the console's twilight years. The cart commands moderate prices in the used market, particularly for complete copies with original packaging, as it was not produced in massive quantities compared to earlier GBA titles.

An interesting aspect of the port was its enhanced graphics and expanded content compared to the SNES original, including new dungeons and story elements. The game also featured improved load times and adjustments made for the smaller screen, though some players noted the GBA's limited color palette presented challenges for the game's detailed sprite work.

Final Fantasy VI Advance remains notable for representing Square's commitment to the GBA late in its lifespan and for bringing one of gaming's most respected RPGs to a wider portable audience, even if its commercial window was narrow compared to its legendary predecessor.
