Game History
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble was developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was the third and final installment in the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy, following the massive success of the first two games in the series.
The game was released in North America on November 22, 1996, with subsequent releases in Europe in 1997 and Japan in 1998. Unlike its predecessors, Donkey Kong Country 3 featured Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong as the playable protagonists, marking the first time players didn't control Donkey Kong himself in a main series entry.
Upon launch, the game received generally positive reviews from critics, though some felt it was slightly less inventive than the earlier titles in the trilogy. It sold respectably and contributed to the SNES's strong library in its final years, though it didn't achieve the cultural phenomenon status of the first Donkey Kong Country.
Today, Donkey Kong Country 3 holds significance for retro collectors as a complete, late-generation SNES release. Original cartridges in good condition command moderate prices in the collector's market, particularly for early printings and complete-in-box copies. The game is also notable for being part of Rare's legacy before the company's acquisition by Microsoft, making it part of gaming history's transition period.
An interesting aspect of the game's development was the music composition by David Wise, who created a soundtrack that departed somewhat from the atmospheric style of previous entries. The game also introduced more complex level design and animal buddy mechanics compared to earlier installments.
Donkey Kong Country 3 received a remake titled Donkey Kong Land III for the Game Boy, and the game has since been re-released on various Nintendo platforms including the Wii Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online service, introducing it to new generations of players while maintaining its place as a respected—if slightly overlooked—entry in one of gaming's most celebrated franchises.
