Game History
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 1. The game was directed by Insomniac co-founder Ted Price, with the team building upon the foundation of the original 1996 Crash Bandicoot.
The game was released in North America on October 18, 1997, followed by a European release in 1998. This timing made it one of the early major releases in the PlayStation's library during a critical period of the console's market expansion.
Crash 2 received strong critical acclaim upon launch, with reviewers praising its improved level design, refined controls, and visual enhancements over the original. The game sold exceptionally well, becoming one of the PlayStation's best-selling titles and helping to establish Crash Bandicoot as a flagship franchise for the console alongside titles like Final Fantasy VII.
The game introduced several features that became series staples, including the ability to power-slide and perform improved jumps, as well as new power-up variations. The expanded level design and increased emphasis on exploration and secret areas provided more depth than its predecessor.
Today, Crash Bandicoot 2 remains historically significant to collectors for several reasons. The original black-label PS1 releases, particularly early print variants, are sought after by retro gaming enthusiasts. The game's influence on the 3D platformer genre is well-documented, and it represents a key moment in PlayStation's early dominance. Complete copies in good condition with original cases and manuals command respectable prices in the secondary market, especially Japanese and PAL region variants.
Interestingly, the game was one of the early demonstrations of Insomniac's ability to produce polished, commercially successful titles outside their later work on action franchises. The success of Crash 2 helped establish Insomniac's reputation as a premier PlayStation developer, a relationship that would define much of their career through the PlayStation 2 era.
