Game History
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game was directed by Insomniac's creative team and built upon the foundation established by the original Crash Bandicoot, released in 1994.
The game launched in North America on October 30, 1997, followed by releases in Europe and Japan in 1998. It came exclusively to the PlayStation console during an era when the system was establishing dominance in the 32-bit generation.
Crash 2 received strong critical acclaim upon release, with reviewers praising its refined gameplay mechanics, colorful level design, and improvements over the original. The game sold millions of copies worldwide and became one of the PlayStation's most successful exclusive titles, cementing Crash Bandicoot as a major mascot for Sony.
Today, Crash 2 remains historically significant for collectors and gaming historians as one of the defining platformers of the PlayStation era. Original copies, particularly first-print editions and variants with different cover art across regions, are sought after by collectors. The game's legacy was further cemented when it was included in the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy remake released in 2018, introducing the game to new generations.
An interesting aspect of the game's development was how Insomniac refined the series' formula in response to feedback from the original. The team expanded level variety, introduced new power-ups and mechanics, and improved the camera system—challenges that had been noted in reviews of the first game.
Crash 2 also featured more elaborate boss encounters and a larger overall scope than its predecessor. The game's commercial success validated Insomniac's approach and led to a third entry, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, released in 1998, which would complete what many consider the series' classic trilogy on PlayStation.
