Game History
Chrono Cross was developed by Square (now Square Enix) and released for the PlayStation 1 on August 15, 1999 in Japan. The game came to North America on November 15, 1999 and Europe in 2000. It was directed by Kazuhari Tomi and produced by Yoichi Miyaji, building on the legacy of the critically acclaimed Super Famicom game Chrono Trigger from 1995.
The game received generally positive reviews upon launch, with critics praising its ambitious narrative, unique dual-world setting, and distinctive visual style created by artist Akira Toriyama. However, some fans were divided on its departure from Chrono Trigger's straightforward storytelling, instead featuring a complex time-travel plot with 45 recruitable characters. It sold respectably during its initial release but did not achieve the blockbuster status of its predecessor.
Chrono Cross has become increasingly significant to collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts over time. Original copies command high prices in the secondary market, particularly complete copies with original cases and manuals, often selling for $80-$150 or more. This appreciation is driven by the game's cult status, its relative scarcity compared to other popular PS1 titles, and growing recognition of its artistic and narrative achievements among a dedicated fanbase.
The game's soundtrack, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, is particularly celebrated and has been performed in orchestral concerts worldwide. Interestingly, Chrono Cross was conceptualized as a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger, allowing the developers creative freedom to explore new themes and gameplay mechanics. The development team included composer Masashi Hamauzu and producer Masari Okubo working alongside Mitsuda.
A remaster titled "Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition" was released in 2022 for multiple platforms, introducing the game to new audiences and renewing interest in original copies. This revival further cemented Chrono Cross's legacy as an important late-era PS1 title and significant entry in Square's catalog.
