Game History

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Kobe (KCEK) and published by Konami. The game was directed by Kazuhiko Matsuoka and served as a launch title for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance handheld system.

The game was released in Japan on March 21, 2001, followed by a North American release on June 11, 2001, and a European launch later that year. It arrived during the GBA's critical early months when quality software was essential for the system's success.

Circle of the Moon received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its presentation, challenging gameplay, and successful adaptation of the Castlevania formula to a portable device. The game was commercially successful and helped establish the GBA as a worthwhile platform. It became one of the system's early standout titles, selling over 1.5 million copies worldwide.

The game is historically significant today for establishing the "Metroidvania" style on handheld consoles, a template that would influence portable gaming for years. It proved that complex, exploration-focused action games could thrive on the GBA. Its success led to multiple sequels on the platform, including Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

Among collectors, Circle of the Moon holds particular value as a launch title for the GBA and as an early entry in the modern Castlevania renaissance of the 2000s. Complete copies in original packaging command higher prices in the collector's market compared to later GBA releases.

An interesting development note is that the game's graphics pushed the GBA's hardware considerably for a launch title, featuring detailed sprites and backgrounds that showcased what the system could accomplish. The dual card system featuring the Dual Setup System (DSS) with cards and whips added strategic depth to combat, distinguishing it from other entries in the series and becoming a defining mechanic of the title.
